Kit Guide

These are some of our recommendations for what kit to buy based on the experience of our members. If you have anything you would like to add to this list, let Steven know and he will update the website!

This is one of the first pieces of kit you should invest in. Masks must have two lenses, one for each eye, or a single lens incorporating a centre divider or support in the mask’s frame and all lenses must be made of shatterproof material. We therefore recommend getting a mask with two lenses, and avoid tempered glass, as this is not shatterproof in most cases.

Sphera X
Aqualung Sphera X

Very popular among many members of the club, this mask offers excellent vision and is very low volume, making you more streamlined and reducing the likelihood of it being kicked off!

SEAC Capri SLT Mask
SEAC Capri SLT Mask

Very good value mask; considerably less expensive than the Sphera X, though may have slightly lower visibility due to the smaller lenses.

Curve Mask
The Curve

Almost identical to the Sphera X but considerably cheaper. The mask strap is a bit less strong.

The snorkel is the other piece of kit you should invest in first. We recommend getting a snorkel without a bendy tube between the mouthpiece and main pipe, as these tend to flap about as you swim along. We also recommend that it has a purge valve, as this makes it much easier to clear the water out of the snorkel. It should also be fitted with a mouthguard, however these can be bought in bulk from the BOA Shop, so it would be cheaper to organise purchasing them as a group.

Item 1
Canal II

This is an excellent snorkel, used by many club members. It’s extremely durable and easy to clear.

Item 2
Prestige

Similar to the Canal II; a bit less durable but significantly less expensive.

Item 3
Mouthguards

Discounted if bought in groups of 10.

Fins must not have a clip or resizeable buckle on the heel; open heel fins are fine provided they do not have a buckle. They should also avoid having any sharp edges.

Mares Plana Avanti Tre
Mares Plana Avanti Tre

These are robust and fairly agile fins that don’t put too much strain on the ankles.

Mares Avanti Quattro Plus
Mares Avanti Quattro Plus

Incredibly powerful (and big) fins, which will enable you to swim very fast. It takes a while to get used to the strain on the ankles, and they aren’t particularly agile.

Murenas
Murenas (and similar Najades)

These fins provide excellent speed and agility due to their stiffness, and are also quite small so easy to transport around, which has made them very popular with members of our club. They only come in four sizes, so we recommend asking other members to try theirs out to see if there is a size that works for you.

SEAC Ala
SEAC Ala

These fins are a bit less expensive than the ones above, but still provide moderate speed and good durability.

We have club hats with our logo on, so if you would like to order these, contact Sam or Rebecca to ask about putting in an order. They come in a pair, black and white.

Hats!

The easiest way to get a glove is to make your own, as it will perfectly fit your hand, and costs far less than buying one ready made. We sometimes do group sessions making our own gloves, but if you want to give it a go, you can find a guide here:

If you would like to buy your own glove, this is a good option that offers a lot of protection.

Sticks always come in a pair: black and white. Our club members have a vast array of sticks between them, so feel free to ask anyone if you can try out their stick to see if it suits you. Often backs go for larger sticks which are more suited to batting down the puck, and forwards go for smaller, more agile sticks, but these are not hard and fast rules!

Dorsal Elite
Dorsal Elite

Excellent sticks for a beginner, with fairly good grip on the puck and reasonable speed.

Carve
Carve

These sticks are unparalleled with their grip on the puck, especially with soft squidge, and come in multiple sizes. We recommend either the 265 or 279 (where the number refers to the length in mm).

Rocket Ghost
Rocket Ghost

These sticks have become popular with our members (specifically the Ghost version), with excellent grip and a good hook. They are, however, not the best sticks for getting good flicks.

Stingray
Stingray

These sticks move pretty fast through the water, and provide an excellent flick.
